Music Amplifies Concentration Power & Brain Development in Children

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato, Greek philosopher during the Classical period

Music has long been held as a universal language whose appeal transcends the boundaries of time and nations. As such, the musical notes have influenced human emotions and acted as a way of expression for the longest time. Right from the childhood lullabies to the love for pop and rock on growing up, music is one of the lifelong companions that we have. But, have you ever wondered why the mind loves music so much? Or, even more importantly, how music can influence the brains of our young ones?

We, at Yuvashakti Model School, ranked among the Top 10 Schools in North West Delhi, have always believed that the influence of music goes way beyond pleasing the young minds of our kids. Several studies and research have proven beyond doubt that music has the ability to amplify concentration power and brain development in children. And, on that note, today we will take a closer look at how music is linked with focus and brainpower.

The connection between music and improved concentration power

It is a scientific truth that the brain needs specific chemicals to help with its concentration prowess, and the effect of music on concentration power stems from the way it influences the secretion of those chemicals.

Unlike general noise, music causes the brain to secrete increased amounts of the chemical dopamine. Studies have shown that listening to music raises dopamine levels in the brain. It acts as a motivation molecule in our brain because it aids the mind with all the functions needed for an individual to be productive. One of the tasks accomplished by it includes regulating the attention to help children remain focused on their work. Dopamine is also instrumental in improving the working memory of children and motivating them to complete their tasks.

In fact, it is also worth mentioning in this regard that music is also a form of therapy that is used for the treatment of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This establishes the fact even more strongly that music lessons or simply listening to the favorite tunes can be beneficial towards improving the concentration and focus of children.

The link between music and continued brain development

The effect of music on brain development has been the subject of countless studies for decades. Studies outlining the impact of music on cognitive developments have frequently focused on something called the Mozart effect. These studies are mainly based on highlighting how the works of Mozart are known to impact focus and intelligence in individuals.

Some of the studies had kids listen to music while others had them taking keyboard lessons. In all these cases, researchers have measured the impact of music on children’s ability to carry out task-based tests. The results were termed as the Mozart effect, which states that music is able to activate the regions of the brain that are responsible for spatial reasoning. Thus, it improves performance in the tasks that need spatial and temporal reasoning. It has also been proven that this impact of music has nothing to do with Mozart’s symphonies or any particular genre of music.

At Yuvashakti Model School, music has always been an integral part of the holistic learning and development of the young buds. So, be it administering music lessons under the guidance of dedicated and experienced teachers or organizing various music events and competitions throughout the year, we, at YMS, ensure that our children are able to enjoy all the finest gifts that the rhymes and rhythms have to offer. And, we sure hope that our children will keep up with their music practices even during these times of lockdown.
